Operation Homefront steps in to offer these families critical support, from financial assistance to the provision of everyday necessities, housing aid, and emergency relief.

Children of Promise, NYC (CPNYC), based in Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brooklyn, and the Bronx, New York, is dedicated to helping children who are impacted by parental incarceration. CPNYC’s goal is not only to support these children but also to address the societal challenges they face, such as systemic racism, poverty, and bias within the criminal justice system. These factors often compound the trauma of parental absence due to incarceration. By providing a therapeutic and educational environment, CPNYC helps these children develop the skills, confidence, and resilience necessary to overcome these obstacles and reach their full potential.
CPNYC offers a unique blend of programs specifically tailored to meet the needs of children with incarcerated parents. These include an after-school program, summer day camp, wellness groups, youth action programs, and mentoring services. These initiatives are designed to support children academically and emotionally, with a focus on fostering resilience and self-worth. Licensed mental health professionals work closely with the children, addressing trauma and helping them build emotional and mental resilience, which is crucial in light of the high stress these children often experience. Additionally, CPNYC has a Saturday Resource Center, where families can engage in activities that strengthen their bonds and receive guidance on navigating the complexities of having an incarcerated family member.
The impact of CPNYC’s work is significant: nearly 84% of participants report increased motivation toward schoolwork, and 97% of those in the mentoring program say they trust their mentors and gain emotional support. These programs are structured not only to help children academically but also to improve their social skills, communication abilities, and mental health. The organization believes that breaking the cycle of incarceration requires addressing these needs holistically by helping children build healthy relationships, develop coping mechanisms, and gain the confidence to thrive in their communities.
As the CEO of Thompson Square Gardens Restaurant Company, I had the privilege of spending time at one of CPNYC's centers, where I cooked for their dedicated staff and the incredible children they serve. Being there allowed me to witness the positive impact CPNYC has on these children’s lives. I saw firsthand the warmth and encouragement CPNYC staff provide, creating a safe space where the children can feel valued and empowered. It was truly inspiring to contribute, even briefly, to an environment dedicated to creating a brighter future for young individuals facing enormous challenges.

Global Human Rights Defence (GHRD) is an international nonprofit organization dedicated to advocating for and protecting human rights across the globe. Since its founding, GHRD has worked tirelessly to address human rights violations, provide relief to marginalized communities, and promote awareness of fundamental freedoms. With a core mission centered on justice, equality, and empowerment, GHRD has become a vital player in the global human rights landscape, operating in areas where the rights of individuals are often disregarded or threatened by oppressive regimes, systemic discrimination, and widespread violence.
At its core, Global Human Rights Defence focuses on safeguarding the rights of those who are most vulnerable, particularly in regions where governance is weak and international attention is scarce. The organization works across multiple domains, including civil liberties, women's rights, children's rights, freedom of speech, and freedom of religion. By concentrating on countries and communities that face chronic injustice, GHRD aims to bring both immediate relief and long-term solutions to individuals whose lives have been marked by violence, exploitation, and repression.
One of the key areas of GHRD’s work is its advocacy for marginalized ethnic and religious minorities. In many parts of the world, these groups face systemic discrimination, persecution, and in some cases, even violence due to their identity. GHRD steps in by providing legal assistance, raising international awareness, and engaging with local and global partners to protect these groups from further harm. Their advocacy extends to public campaigns, reports, and lobbying efforts aimed at policymakers, international organizations, and governments to hold perpetrators accountable and prevent future atrocities.
Another focal point of Global Human Rights Defence is the protection of women’s rights. In many countries, women are disproportionately affected by human rights abuses, including domestic violence, gender-based discrimination, and lack of access to education or healthcare. GHRD supports grassroots organizations and local initiatives that work to empower women through education, training, and advocacy. The organization promotes gender equality, fights against human trafficking, and works to end harmful practices such as female genital mutilation and child marriage. By championing women's rights, GHRD seeks to break the cycle of violence and oppression that hinders the social, economic, and political progress of women in many parts of the world.
Global Human Rights Defence also places significant emphasis on protecting the rights of children. In regions plagued by conflict, poverty, and instability, children often become the most vulnerable victims. GHRD runs campaigns to combat child labor, trafficking, and abuse, ensuring that children are given the opportunity to grow up in safe environments and access basic rights, including education and healthcare. Through direct interventions, public awareness campaigns, and legal support, the organization works to dismantle the structures that allow child exploitation to thrive.
The organization is equally committed to defending freedom of speech and the press, which are vital pillars of democracy and human dignity. In many countries, journalists, activists, and human rights defenders face threats, harassment, or even violence for simply voicing their opinions or reporting on human rights abuses. GHRD provides assistance to those who are targeted for speaking out, including legal aid, safe relocation, and advocacy on the international stage. The organization's commitment to protecting the freedom of expression extends to educating the public about the importance of independent media and holding governments accountable for their treatment of dissenters.
In addition to its advocacy work, Global Human Rights Defence conducts research and publishes detailed reports on the state of human rights in various countries and regions. These reports, often compiled with the help of local activists and journalists, provide critical insights into ongoing human rights crises, helping to inform the global community and shape policy decisions. The organization's reports are used by international bodies, including the United Nations and the European Union, to assess the human rights situation in certain regions and take necessary action.
Global Human Rights Defence understands that effective human rights protection requires a multi-faceted approach. In collaboration with local organizations, governments, and international bodies, GHRD engages in capacity-building initiatives that empower local communities to stand up for their rights. By training local human rights defenders and providing resources, the organization helps to create sustainable, long-term change from within the communities it serves. Furthermore, GHRD’s humanitarian work includes providing medical care, food, and shelter to victims of human rights abuses, ensuring that those in the most dire circumstances receive immediate relief.
Central to GHRD's philosophy is the belief that human rights are universal and non-negotiable. The organization operates on the principle that every individual, regardless of nationality, race, gender, religion, or socio-economic status, is entitled to dignity, freedom, and justice. This belief drives its work in some of the world’s most challenging environments, where human rights violations are rampant, and the international community’s attention is limited.
While Global Human Rights Defence faces significant challenges in its mission, including political pushback and security risks in volatile regions, its impact is undeniable. By working directly with affected communities and raising global awareness, GHRD not only highlights human rights abuses but also offers concrete solutions and support to those in need. The organization's approach combines immediate action with long-term strategies, making it a crucial force in the global fight for human dignity and equality.
In the coming years, Global Human Rights Defence aims to expand its reach and deepen its impact, addressing emerging human rights challenges such as climate change-induced displacement, digital rights, and the protection of human rights in an increasingly polarized global landscape. Through continued advocacy, research, and direct intervention, GHRD remains committed to the fight for human rights and justice for all.
In a world where human rights are often under threat, Global Human Rights Defence stands as a beacon of hope for those who are voiceless, oppressed, and marginalized. Its tireless efforts remind the world that the struggle for human rights is far from over and that every individual has a role to play in ensuring that dignity, freedom, and justice prevail.

Italians Feed America has grown rapidly since its inception, expanding its reach through partnerships with corporate sponsors, local governments, and fellow nonprofit organizations. Its impact can be seen in the thousands of meals served each year, but perhaps more importantly, in the connections it fosters within communities. Volunteers and recipients alike often speak of the sense of belonging and dignity they feel through the simple act of sharing a meal.

The World Resources Institute (WRI) is a global organization that focuses on research, innovation, and solutions aimed at tackling some of the world’s most significant environmental and developmental challenges. WRI’s mission is to promote sustainability by addressing climate change, energy transitions, urban development, forest conservation, water management, and more. While WRI operates in over 60 countries worldwide, two of its most impactful regional hubs are WRI Indonesia and WRI India. These offices focus on unique regional challenges in the environment and development while contributing to global sustainability goals.
WRI Indonesia: Protecting Natural Resources and Reducing Emissions
Key Areas of Focus for WRI Indonesia
1.Forest and Peatland Conservation
- WRI Indonesia plays a pivotal role in protecting the country’s forests, which are vital for global carbon storage. The clearing of forests, especially for agriculture like palm oil production, has led to significant deforestation. Additionally, Indonesia’s peatlands are some of the world’s largest carbon sinks. However, the draining and burning of these peatlands for agricultural use releases vast amounts of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere, exacerbating global climate change.
- WRI Indonesia's Global Forest Watch provides crucial data on deforestation rates and helps monitor illegal logging and land conversion activities. The Peatland Restoration Agency is another collaborative initiative, working to restore millions of hectares of degraded peatlands.
2.Sustainable Land Use
- Promoting sustainable land use is a priority for WRI Indonesia. By encouraging better agricultural practices, such as agroforestry and regenerative farming, they aim to balance economic development with environmental protection. This helps reduce emissions while ensuring that local communities can continue to thrive.
3.Climate Change Mitigation
- WRI Indonesia collaborates with the Indonesian government on climate policy to meet international commitments under the Paris Agreement. By helping design more effective climate action plans and emission reduction strategies, WRI Indonesia ensures that the country is on a path toward a lower-carbon future.
- The country is also working on transitioning toward renewable energy, and WRI Indonesia plays an advisory role in ensuring a just and sustainable energy transition.
4. Sustainable Cities
- Indonesia’s rapid urbanization has led to increased air pollution, traffic congestion, and energy demand. WRI Indonesia is involved in sustainable urban development, helping cities adopt low-carbon infrastructure, improve air quality, and promote energy-efficient transportation systems.
WRI India: Leading the Way in Climate Action and Sustainable Development
India, with its rapidly growing population and economy, is at the forefront of global efforts to combat climate change and promote sustainability. WRI India is committed to solving critical issues related to air pollution, renewable energy, climate resilience, and sustainable urban growth. Its initiatives are crucial for ensuring that India meets its climate goals while addressing the developmental needs of its diverse population.
Key Areas of Focus for WRI India
1.Energy Transitions
- India is the third-largest emitter of carbon dioxide globally, and addressing the country's reliance on fossil fuels is essential to the global fight against climate change. WRI India plays a crucial role in decarbonizing India's energy sector through the India Energy Transitions Commission, which promotes renewable energy adoption and energy efficiency measures.
- The organization's work in promoting solar and wind energy has helped India become one of the leading nations in renewable energy capacity. They also advocate for energy efficiency in buildings and industries, helping reduce overall energy demand.
2.Climate Resilience
- WRI India is actively involved in designing policies and projects that promote climate resilience. India is highly vulnerable to the impacts of climate change, including extreme heat, droughts, floods, and rising sea levels. WRI India works with national and local governments to develop strategies that enhance communities' capacity to adapt to these changes.
- Their Climate Resilience Practice assists cities and rural areas in integrating climate risk into planning, ensuring that infrastructure, agriculture, and water management systems are better equipped to handle future climate impacts.
3.Sustainable Cities and Transport
- Rapid urbanization in India has led to severe challenges, including air pollution, inefficient public transport, and inadequate housing. WRI India’s Sustainable Cities program works to create greener, more liveable urban areas by promoting public transportation, electric vehicles, and energy-efficient buildings.
- WRI India collaborates with local governments to promote low-carbon mobility solutions such as electric buses, cycling lanes, and pedestrian-friendly spaces. Their work in cities like Delhi and Mumbai has helped improve air quality and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
4.Water Security
- India is one of the most water-stressed countries in the world. WRI India works on developing strategies to ensure sustainable water use and management. Their Aqueduct Water Risk Atlas provides critical data that helps government officials, businesses, and NGOs monitor water risks and plan accordingly to mitigate shortages.
- WRI India is also involved in watershed management, which helps restore natural ecosystems and ensures more sustainable agricultural and industrial water use.
5.Air Pollution
- Air quality in Indian cities is among the worst globally, with millions of people suffering from health issues due to pollution. WRI India is at the forefront of tackling air pollution by advocating for cleaner fuels, promoting the use of electric vehicles, and improving public transport systems.
- The organization is working to provide data and research that empower local governments and the private sector to take action in reducing harmful emissions.
The Global Significance of WRI Indonesia and WRI India
Both WRI Indonesia and WRI India play critical roles in addressing regional environmental challenges that have global consequences. Indonesia, with its vast tropical forests and peatlands, is central to the fight against deforestation and climate change, while India’s leadership in renewable energy and climate resilience is essential for mitigating global warming. The work of WRI in these countries not only benefits their respective populations but also contributes to global efforts to curb climate change, protect biodiversity, and promote sustainable development.
By focusing on issues like forest conservation, renewable energy, sustainable urbanization, and climate resilience, both WRI Indonesia and WRI India demonstrate that large-scale, impactful change is possible when research, innovation, and collaboration come together.
As global environmental challenges continue to intensify, the work of WRI Indonesia and WRI India serves as an inspiring model for how local and regional efforts can create meaningful global impacts. Their comprehensive approach to tackling deforestation, air pollution, water scarcity, and climate vulnerability is essential to ensuring a sustainable future for both countries and the world.
These efforts are not just for governments and large corporations; individuals and businesses can also contribute to the vision of a more sustainable planet. Supporting organizations like WRI—whether through partnerships, financial contributions, or advocacy—ensures that critical environmental challenges can be addressed effectively. With concerted global action, we can help protect ecosystems, build climate-resilient communities, and secure a future in which economic growth goes hand in hand with environmental sustainability.

Monarch Expands Substance Abuse Treatment Services to Include Men: A Landmark Achievement in Muskogee, Oklahoma
Monarch, a distinguished nonprofit organization based in Muskogee, Oklahoma, has recently achieved a significant milestone by extending its substance abuse treatment services to men. This development comes after 41 years of dedicated service providing inpatient treatment exclusively for women. The decision to broaden their services marks a crucial step forward in addressing the longstanding gap in inpatient treatment options for men within the region.
The expansion of Monarch's services to include men follows a meticulous process of planning and assessment by the organization's leadership team. Executive Director Rachel Neighbors underscored the significance of this move, citing a 2021 state survey that revealed a considerable demand for inpatient substance abuse treatment among men in Muskogee County. Until now, individuals seeking such services were compelled to seek treatment in distant cities like Oklahoma City or Tulsa.
Rachel Neighbors shared that Monarch had been exploring the possibility of providing inpatient treatment for men for approximately five years. However, the lack of funding had been a hindrance until the recent Medicaid expansion provided the necessary resources to proceed with this vital initiative.
The newly opened men's facility is located at the original women's treatment facility on Fredonia Street, while all Monarch women have been relocated to the larger facility on Broadway. This shift signifies Monarch's commitment to offering gender-specific treatment environments tailored to meet the distinct needs of both men and women in their recovery journeys.
The men's facility features rooms accommodating up to three individuals each and includes common areas such as a living room, dining area, kitchen, and a dedicated meeting room for group therapy and 12-step meetings. The facility is equipped to serve men aged 18 and older, accepting referrals from various sources including probation and parole, DHS, drug courts, and self-referrals. Notably, Medicaid covers the cost of treatment, ensuring accessibility for individuals in need of assistance.
On the inaugural day, five men commenced their treatment at the facility, with additional admissions scheduled throughout the week. Rachel Neighbors expressed optimism about the facility's capacity, mentioning that it can initially accommodate up to 34 patients, with plans to start with around 24 and adjust based on demand and capacity.
In addition to inpatient treatment for men, Monarch continues to provide outpatient services for both men and women, recognizing the importance of holistic care in addressing substance abuse issues. The organization's dedication to serving pregnant women, women with children, and now men underscores its commitment to providing comprehensive and tailored support to individuals and families within the community.
Monarch's expansion aligns with its overarching mission to deliver a range of services, including outpatient and residential treatment, as well as a halfway house for pregnant women and women with children. The recent receipt of a $2,500 grant from the Exchange Club of Muskogee further illustrates the community's support for Monarch's commendable efforts.
As a prominent figure in the Muskogee community, Thompson Square Gardens Restaurant Company and its owner, Caleb L. Thompson, stand in solidarity with Monarch. They commend the organization for its extraordinary dedication to addressing substance abuse issues and supporting individuals on their paths to recovery in Muskogee, Oklahoma. Monarch's expansion signifies a pivotal moment in advancing accessible and inclusive substance abuse treatment services, ultimately contributing to the well-being and resilience of the entire community.
